A relative had just been diagnosed with Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)… two weeks in and we are a bit numb
Hi @Rita1 I am so glad that you have found us and I am not surprised that only two weeks in that you are all a bit numb, for me numb is the body’s protection mechanism after a shock.
Also that everyone deals with shock differently and there is no right or wrong way.
Perhaps just be ever so kind to yourselves and all keep communicating.
Just try and take it a day at a time.
Perhaps your relative might find it a handy hint to write down all their fears, questions and practicalities for their next appointment, they might appreciate someone to go with them as a note taker/support as well.
The Blood Cancer UK support line is also there for you on 0808 2080 888
We are here to support you as a family member as well.
Please do keep posting and really be kind to yourselves
Hi @Rita1
I’m sorry to hear about your family member. It’s sounds like it has been a huge shock to you all which is understandable.
I can see @Erica has given you the support line number if you think it would help to talk things through.
The forum is such a supportive place and there is always somebody to listen.
Please take good care of yourself.
Thank you ladies
Derek (my ex husband)is still in hospital. ICU, he had a heart attack which highlighted the blood cancer. So trying to treat both conditions is problematic.
My daughters and I are rallying around to support him as best we can. It’s all so new and reading the positive results others have is comforting
Many thanks
Rita
So sorry you have to post but welcome to the forum. My husband was diagnosed last year. I have a thread on here that I have posted on as the year has progressed…. Numb is such a good way to describe the feeling.
Sending you lots of love as you navigate recovery for your family member!
Hi Rita,
