The family and I are looking to travel abroad to Canary Islands in near future.Hubby has multiple myeloma and had his Stem cell transplant a year ago. His numbers are all looking good now and after suffering badly with fatigue he is now in a place where he is confident to try foreign travel. We realise it is not a great time for flu bugs ect, so keeping everything crossed. We have got insurance through “Insurance With”.
Can you tell us anything we should do and any things we should avoid?
All advice most welcome, especially seasoned travellers…
A big shout out to @2DB@Paula1 and @Erica , hope you are all doing ok. Think of you all often.
Hi @Olivia great to hear from you with the update of how your Hubby has progressed.
Personally I would be guided by your Hubby’s consultant , Specialist nurse or GP and have appropriate vaccines.
Glad to hear you have got insurance.
My personal thoughts: cover up and plenty of high factor sunscreen/blocker. If your husband gets bitten by anything, big or small, to seek medical advice. Drink bottled water and use bottled water when cleaning teeth. Avoid ice cubes, salad items, unpasteurised items, ensure seafood is properly cooked and hot food has not been standing for a long time etc. If your husband gets an infection seek medical advice.
Perhaps your husband might consider taking a a short diary of his medical history, a list of medications and allergies.
Take masks with you in case you need them and consider wearing them on flights and in crowded places.
I was told to be aware of altitudes and humidity and be guided by your husband when he feels fatigued.
Both of you try and relax and enjoy yourselves, it sounds a wonderful, well deserved. opportunity. Please do let us know how you get on.
What a wonderful speedy response. As always very useful advice, which we will take on board.
I am a little anxious as we have been so careful these last 2 years, since diagnosis. Hubby now wants to try and have a little bit of “ normal”. I think a lot of it is me trying to wrap him up in cotton wool.I now have to let him breathe, hence our holiday plans. Thankyou for taking the time to reply.
I hope you are ok and send you best wishes, take care.x
@Paula1 great to hear you are doing well and have managed a holiday.
We are in the canaries now and it’s day 4, hubby has got ulcers in his mouth and struggling to eat. Been to a doctor today as we have been using Bonjela and salt mouthwashes. They haven’t eased his symptoms. The doc was very good and did BP and checked his throat. He wasn’t concerned and we did discuss the myeloma too. His mouth was never this bad after his STC ! Anyway we have a prescription for a mouthwash so will try that. Other than not eating much, we are enjoying the break. If this is all he gets, we will be grateful. Going to get ready now to venture out for an evening stroll.
Keep in touch, let me know what else you been doing.
